Edgar S. Meeres, of Princess Pats, Killed in Action in Northern France
A Saskatoon paper speaking of the death of Pte. Meeres, of that city, brother of Horace and Thomas Meeres, of Red Deer, says:
Edgar S. Meeres, of 1116 Avenue G north has been killed in action in France. News of his death reached his widow this morning. Mr. Meeres, who was well known to a large circle of business men in this city enlisted just one year ago under Lieut. Turnbull with the University company that was sent as reinforcements to the Princess Pats and was in France about four months after his enlistment.
He was born in Plymouth, England, the son of a physician of that city, but came to Canada about 30 years ago, locating first at Balcarres, Sask., where he farmed for some time. He was in Saskatoon about eight years during which time he was in the real estate and commission business with L. Goldman on Avenue C and Twenty-fifth street.
Pte. Meeres was in the local body of Engineers for a while and his is the first casualty among the 130 men the Citizen's Training Corps sent to the front. He was a member of Christ church and was very well liked in Saskatoon, being especially noted for his upright business methods.
He leaves a wife and two sons, Edgar1 and Horace. Both his sons have enlisted in the 65th Battalion and he also has two nephews serving the Empire. He has a brother at Red Deer, Lieut. H. Meeres,2 and a brother Thomas, at Clearview.
